With the loss of hardcore rappers Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G., the genre remains with DMX at the reign. Earlier, though, in the late 90s, DMX was still a thug in and out of jail, looking for a recording deal. He would get his break with Def Jam, but would leave it when he believed he is too big of a rapper to work under Jay Z.
