LL Cool J was discovered in Rick Rubin's basement, where Ad Rock of the Beastie Boys came across a demo recording that the young aspiring rapper sent Def Jam and convinced Rubin to sign him. I Need A Bit was released on Def Jam in 1984 and went platinum, leading the way to a second LL Cool J album a year later and so on, establishing a pop-rap style that is aggressive and relaxed at the same time.
