As R.E.M. were preparing to release their album, "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" it was announced that they would re-sign a deal with Warner. Rumor spread that the deal was worth a record breaking eight million dollars. In light of such a huge figure, the commercial failure of "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" was ironic. The album failed to generate a hit single for R.E.M., and it only went platinum where its three predecessors went quadruple platinum.
